The condition of the existing wall
Render needs a sound, suitably prepared background. Loose or cracked areas, failed previous coatings, damp and movement can all change what needs to happen before a new finish is applied. Covering a problem without understanding it can lead to the same defect showing through again.
The inspection should establish what is bonded, what may need removing and whether the underlying masonry needs repair. If a leak or building movement is involved, the cause needs attention first. The chosen render system must be suitable for the wall and its exposure.
Preparation, access and protection
Preparation can include protecting windows and paths, removing loose material, making good the background and forming clean edges around openings. Details at sills, corners, pipes and roof junctions need care because water should be directed away from the wall, not trapped behind the finish.
Access also affects how a job is planned. The height and layout of the elevation, space around the property, parking and any shared access arrangements all matter. If a tower or other access equipment is required, that should be discussed during the visit rather than assumed from a street photograph.
The render type and finish
Sand and cement render and through-coloured monocouche systems are different approaches. The right option depends on the background, exposure, existing finish, desired appearance and the system instructions. Colour, texture, beads and junction details should be agreed before work begins.
A small repair and a full elevation are not the same scope. Matching an older finish can also take more preparation than applying a new finish to a clean, consistent background. The visit helps clarify the area involved and what can reasonably be retained.
How Nova Coat prepares a free quote
For rendering in London and South East London, Nova Coat & Plaster looks at the wall, access and finish in person before preparing a free quote. Photos can help arrange the visit, but they do not show the full condition of the substrate or every access detail. There are no price ranges here because the scope must be based on the actual property.
When getting in touch, include the postcode, which elevation needs attention, what the existing finish is doing and whether any other work is planned. The quote can then explain the preparation and render work being considered. If the wall needs another trade to address a cause first, that will be discussed.
